Lake Chapala
Lake Chapala Jalisco, Mexico – 2022. Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest freshwater lake. It is situated in the states of Jalisco and Michoacán and surrounded by mountains. It is a shallow lake 1,524 metres (5,000 feet) above sea level, approximately 80km (50mi) long by 12.5km (7.8miles) wide with a surface area of 1,100 km2 (420 mi2).
The lake is a critical habitat for several species of migratory birds, such as the American white pelican and home to thousands of indigenous plants and animals.
Unfortunately, because of agricultural, domestic, and industrial contamination much of this wild life is at risk and the lake is rarely used for recreational purposes.
